Currently, the port of Klaipeda is extensive dredging. Within a short time in the sea has been floated about 1.5 million cubic meters of soil. The biggest problem of Klaipeda port is the fact that the soil has to be floated very far. There are two dampings or earth spill areas in the Baltic Sea near the Lithuanian coasts.
Distal landfill is 20 kilometres from the port gate. It occupies 17.8 square meters kilometres. The soil dumped dug in the port is back-filled in the 45-49 m depth in 1372 hectares of land. To this port area are shipped moraine loam layers, as well as the alluvial sand and silt. Another sea dump - close-damping, is located 10 km from Klaipeda port entrance. Its area is about two square kilometres. There is just dumped only sandy alluvial soil. It is poured into 270 hectares, where the depth is from 28 to 34 meters.
Currently, the Dutch company “Van Oord” does the greatest of all time dredging in the harbour. There will be excavated over 4.5 million cubic meters of soil. It is transported to a remote area of damping. Each time the port of Klaipeda begins dredging it is said that the soil is not floated to the damping region but poured along the way. Even the scientists had expressed concerns that sediments from the sea are washed to the shore.
Scientists can not always be believed, because they have their own interests because of the ordering studies on the spread of spilled soil at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
How excavated soil is floated from the channel of port Klaipeda is supervising Klaipeda State Seaport Authority master technicians.
„Fear and doubt that the soil can be discarded on the way to the damping region reached our offices. We do not have any evidence that this would be done. There is introduced a constant ships carrying the soil control “, - assured Klaipeda State Seaport vice captain Adomas Alekna. Port professionals constantly doing raids and checks how the soil is being transported to the damping region. During the vessel traffic monitoring systems is watched if the ship was stopped while sailing to the damping area. According to Mr. Alekna such cases have occurred.
Klaipeda State Seaport Authority Director Eugenijus Gentvilas said that the contractors, who deepen the port, are informed about it to prevent the abuse when the soil is poured into the sea. „Contractors have ensured that they will not do it. We believe because it is serious, one of the world's leading dredging companies, “- explained the Mr. Gentvilas.
So far floating the ground to the sea, part of Klaipeda citizens do not understand why it has not been poured near Giruliai. According to the general plan of Klaipeda city it is foreseen that from the poured soil it will be built an artificial island and a large entertainment complex there.
Now, maybe it is too late to pour the soil into the future or dream island destination. However, the Lithuanian Architects' Union of Klaipeda county organizations board member Staševičiūtė requested that at least part of the deepening of the port, when it will be excavated over one million cubic meters; would be poured into the island's location at sea near Klaipeda.
Is it possible to do, even if the island prepared for the future of entertainment projects?
