Storms ravaged the coasts of Kaliningrad Region

Kaliningrad coasts were hit by a huge storm on January 12-15.
The special security committee found out that the damage done reached 50 million rubles (4.3 million LTL).
Storms devastated the coasts of Svetlogorsk, Zelenogradsk and Pionersk; storms also destroyed sand dunes of the Curonian Spit. Beaches were washed, banks eroded and sand dunes destroyed. The biggest damage was caused to the coasts of Curonian Spit. Here, about half a kilometer of dunes need to be strengthened. Kaliningrad Region has a special program to called “Baltic Sea Coast, Kaliningrad Lagoon and the Curonian Lagoon Protection Program for 2011-2020”. This program provides funding for repairing these damaged coastlines. Funds are limited, thus, there will be a need for additional funds to repair damaged coastlines. It is planned that part of the funds will be taken from Kaliningrad Region Administrative office.
