Last year, the container train Saule, going from Lithuania to Kazakhstan, has left Lithuania on January 10. The journey from Lithuania to Kazakhstan and China takes about two weeks.
The first cargo was computers. In winter time, when it is very cold in Kazakhstan, it will be used to transport vehicle parts to Europe.
At the beginning the train Saule will go according to the needs, but it is planned to have a regular schedule in the future. It is still unclear when the train will acquire new stable containers.
Analogous situation was with the train Viking. It had a lot of problems until it managed to acquire a permanent schedule. Last year, the train Viking managed to transport 56 thousand TEUs. It is believed that the train Saule will be more successful.
Kazakhstan is a country which should seek more cooperation with the Baltic region. In reality, the cooperation exists: the railways are transporting cargo from Estonian port of Muga. Lithuania has missed great chances to cooperate with Kazakhstan in the past. The mutual relationship has somewhat frozen when Lithuania decided to sell Mazeikiai Oil to PK Orlen and not to Kazakhstan’s KazMunaiGaz. Kazakhstan opens up opportunities to connect with China.
