Russia has been closely monitoring the visit of Lithuanian delegation to U.S., which consisted of businessmen and the Minister of Transport Eligijus Masiulis.
Such attention of Russia is understandable. Lithuanian delegates invited Maersk Line to join the building of terminal. Russia has also offered the same company to contribute in building a deep-water port in Kaliningrad. Thus, the interests of Russia and Lithuania are clashing on such a port. Russian media mocked the words of Lithuanian Minister of Transport Eligijus Masiulis who said that Butinge port will be the northernmost port which does not freeze in winter. Now such port is considered to be Klaipeda. Russian media says that there are ten ports further to north which do not freeze. However, it remains unclear what are these ports. In this case, Russians do not have anything to boast about. Last year, they suffered with their frozen ports in the Gulf of Finland. They lacked ice breakers; and ships were stuck in ice. This year, they experience similar problems, when a Russian ship was stuck in ice again.
