DFDS Seaways ferry Kaunas which is flying the line Kiel – Ust Luga also visits Estonian port Padilski. The first visit to Padilski was on January 21.
The attempts to sail to the Estonian port were made last year in November and December. So far, ferry Kaunas visits the port while sailing from Russia to Germany. This is done for a couple of reason. First, previously, Kaunas visited German port of Kiel at night and had to wait. Now, the ferry after spending few hours in Padilski comes to Kiel on Monday morning at 7 a.m. The ferry can start unloading immediately. Another reason for this is EU passport control of Russian citizens.
There is no need to re-check their passports when they are in Germany. It is also useful to visit Padilski because of cargo. The ferry can take cars from the port. Typically, there are cargo places available in the ferry. From Russia to Germany, various trucks loaded with goods and timber are transported. From Germany to Russia, various wheel equipment and roll trailers are transported.
There are no places left when the ferry leaves Germany for Russia. Thus, there is no need for the ferry to visit Padilski while sailing from Germany to Russia. Ust-Luga has also accepted its first ferry from Finland on January 23. It was Finhawk ferry from the company Finnlines. It is believed that there is a possibility for a new line between Helsinki and Ust-Luga. The first attempts have been made at the end of 2010.
